Birnur X Arap's 17 puppies at 3 weeks old

 New area separating the litter in half so the mob of 17 does not overwhelm momma.  For the purpose of pics only, the males are on the left and females on the right of the divider.  Momma can go around the fence at the far end or jump it.  The heat lamps were raised but we had just let Birnur in to check things out here.

This one is our biggest challenge, since he has a mind of his own about how much and when he eats!  If the milk is not warm enough to his satisfaction, forget it!  He's getting TLC.

The "big guy!"  

Dağcı (pronounced DAH jeh) is his Turkish nickname, meaning mountain climber, as he was always the one to climb to the top of the puppy pile to sleep.  My theory is that this guy squished Male 1 (first born) into the lower end of the uterine horn so he didn't have as much room to grow prior to birth.  Therefore, he may make up for all of it as he grows. Who knows!

 This is still a very crazy process, trying to figure out ways to keep puppies supplemented and their area clean!  This week a litter box area will be introduced for each group of puppies.  Let's hope they use it!!!  Last time we tried it with a litter, they slept in the litterbox!  :-(

All puppies are thriving.  We  began about halfway through the week supplementing them with bottles once every night, using homemade puppy formula (goat milk, goat yogurt, karo syrup, and egg yolks).  In the morning, we make sure the smallest pups get plenty of uninterrupted teat time.  All are walking and eyes have begun opening.  Pups can now hear and regulate their body temperature!

This was a natural birth starting about 3:20 am Sunday morning and by very late Sunday night we thought we were done at a whopping 14 puppies, only to wake Monday to 17 puppies (an extra 3 snuck out overnight)!  We have been a bit in shock all week.  Momma Birnur is a milk machine!  We have not needed to supplement so far, but have made sure all get ample teat time. We have formula ingredients and baby bottles to use if and when needed.  Momma Birnur is eating 2 raw chicken leg quarters in the morning and 2 raw chicken leg quarters in the evening.  We may soon need to feed more.  She is very picky and that is all she will eat.  She is also getting 3 Tums a day, for extra calcium, per our vet's suggestion.  What an amazing experience!!!  Pups will be 8 weeks old the day after April Fools Day.

Note:  Although we have birth weights, things were a bit mixed up, so we cannot be sure whose weight is whose, or who were the ones to appear like magic overnight!  Therefore, listed here are the weights we are sure of from day 1.  All puppies have been very strong and active since birth, and there are no "special needs" puppies, other than making sure all get enough teat-time daily.
