Rakun surprisingly gave birth to a dead pup a day later, after she had seemed relaxed and finished whelping the day before. We took her to the vet and there was still a dead pup inside, so poor mama had to have a C-section to remove the last pup. Rakun is doing extremely well, though, and returned to nurse her pups just a couple hours later. The puppies didn't even get to the point of crying for her yet. The pup born deceased at home was a huge brindle female. So sad. The deceased pup taken by C-section was a good-sized dark grey fawn male. Both deceased puppies looked completely normal, just probably got stuck in the birth canal too long. The total litter size not counting the 2 late deceased puppies was therefore 9 (5 males and 4 females). All seven live puppies are doing fantastic and seemed to be born advanced in motor skills. They crawled immediately to mom and began nursing, and they are motoring like salamanders all around the whelping box.
